“Barbados will not be going to WorldSkills Abu Dhabi for an experience, Barbados is going to win!”

Chairman of the TVET Council, Dr. Hensley Sobers made that declaration during a fiery motivational session held for the WorldSkills Barbados team going to compete in WorldSkills Abu Dhabi in October.

WorldSkills is a ‘skills Olympics’ for persons ages 16 to 22 who are enrolled in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions. Approximately 1300 participants from 77 countries are expected to compete in 51 skill areas. Barbados will compete in Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, Garment Making and Hairdressing.

Dr Sobers insisted that although Barbados was only competing in four skill areas, it was important that the competitors understood the significance of their participation.

“Barbados has invested in you, we want to demonstrate that we have young people here who are just as competent and competitive as anyone else in the world and we don’t want that to be an empty statement,” he said.

“We are not just going to Abu Dhabi because it’s an excursion, we are not just going for the experience only, we are going to win!  We are going up there to win; we are going to be champions,” the Chairman stressed.

He assured the competitors that while only they could determine if they wanted to succeed, the TVET Council remains committed to facilitating their success as much as possible.

He outlined four principles of readiness that would play a key role in achieving success: knowledge of subject, skills, attitude and motivation.

Adding that preparation was of the utmost importance, he said, “You can’t be a champion if preparation is not happening, the journey to championship therefore is to demonstrate that you are ready for this thing, that you are hungry about winning, improving your life and making a mark in the profession that you want to pursue.” (PR/TVET Council Barbados)
