THE Technical and Vocational Education and Training Council, Barbados has expanded the number of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Barbados and Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQs) which are available for employers, and, education and training providers to offer prospective candidates.
Among the 24 CVQs that are being offered by approved Assessment Centres are Agro-Food Processing Level 1, Amenity Horticulture Levels 1 & 2, Crop Production Level 1, Data Operations level 1, Developing a New or Existing Business Enterprise Level 3 which is aimed at entrepreneurs, Electrical Installation Level 1, Fashion Designing Level 2, Massage Therapy Level 3 and Occupational Safety and Health Level 3. The two newly available NVQs are Massage Therapy and Occupational Safety and Health Level 2.
“Altogether, there are 56 NVQs and 64 CVQs which have been approved for offer by any interested training provider that is registered with the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC). Whether you are a training institution that wants to offer N/CVQs to the public or an employer that wants to offer them to your staff, you can contact TVETC which will guide you through the process of becoming an approved Assessment Centre,” said Paul Puckerin, Senior Technical Officer (STO) with the TVET Council.
The N/CVQs are competence-based qualifications which are based on locally and regionally approved occupational standards. Persons who are trained and successfully demonstrate competence when assessed against national occupational standards are awarded an NVQ and those who are trained and successfully assessed against regionally approved occupational standards are awarded a CVQ.
The TVET Council (TVETC) is the Awarding Body for N/CVQs awarded to candidates drawn from the workforce while the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is the Awarding Body for CVQ candidates in secondary schools.
