The TVET Council (TVETC), through the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) Programme, will host its first WorldSkills Barbados Juniors (WSBJ) Future Skills Camp online, from September 6 – 10, 2021.

The five-day camp is aimed at students ages 14 -18 and is being held as an alternative to the second biennial WorldSkills Barbados Juniors (WSBJ) Competition which was scheduled to take place in November 2021 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Technical Officer with the TVET Council and Lead Officer of the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) Programme, Dario Walcott, explained: “There will be no WSBJ competition this year because of COVID, however, since we had already begun to explore the idea with WorldSkills Russia of holding a Future Skills Camp, the TVET Council saw the opportunity to stage the inaugural camp this year.”

Mr. Walcott added: “This is one of the benefits of being part of the WorldSkills International community. Countries share resources and expertise and provide training opportunities for each other which helps to improve the quality of the global technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system.”

The Future Skills Camp will equip participants with knowledge and skills in five areas: 3D Digital Game Art, Aerial Robotics (Drone Technology), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Mobile Applications Development and Internet of Things.

“The Future Skills Camp is expected to provide diversified training options for Barbados' youth. Participants will be exposed to new and exciting skills which are important to a digital future, they will gain insight into diverse career options and they will have the opportunity to meet and engage with other young people who have similar interests,” Mr. Walcott stressed.  (PR/TVET Council Barbados)
