Rukiya (right) practices her cutting techniques under the close supervision of Maxine Thomas, Cosmetology Instructor at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP). She worked on cutting techniques for both males and females, as well as on beard design.
The Barbados delegation to the WorldSkills Americas (WSA) Competition 2014, which takes place in Bogota, Columbia, left for that country late last week.
The delegation consisted of the Chief Technical Delegate to the WSA Marlyn Rawlins, the Team Leader Maxine Thomas, the Technical Expert & Coach Adzil Stuart and Barbados’ Competitor in the Ladies and Men’s Hairdressing category Rukiya Clarke. Rukiya is the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) Competition’s 2014 Bronze Medallist.
Following her bronze medal win on March 17th, Rukiya was kept busy practicing for the WSA Competition. She received further coaching and training from her instructor and Chief Executive Officer of the Semaj International School of Cosmetology and Trichology (SISCT) Mrs. Wildina James as well as Tricia Marshall, Maxine Thomas and Adzil Stuart Rukiya was selected to represent Barbados at WSA 2014 because she met the age criteria for that competition which is 16 – 21. Meanwhile, the WorldSkills International Competition’s age criterion is 16-22.
The WSA 2014 Competition runs from April 1 – 6.
