Dr Sylvia Henry, J P, Chair of the Standards Approval Committee (SAC), has also supported the TVETC since her appointment in 2018. An integral part of the TVETC’s mission to prepare individuals for a more competitive and technologically advanced labor force, is through training and certification which young people can use to acquire work-related skills and exciting careers.
On this matter, Dr Sylvia Henry, J P, states why TVET is critical, particularly for Barbados’ growth: “UNESCO research and policy papers have emphasized that there can be no sustainable national development without TVET. Technical and vocational education contributes in large part to the socio- economic development of Barbados in a way that many sectors cannot.”
With her career spanning diverse areas in education, Dr. Henry went on to say how delighted she was to be a part of the Council and discussed her hopes and expectations for working with the SAC on standards development.
“I expect that TVETC will continue to work with international and world-class partnerships to develop policies and frameworks to ensure that the national services we offer are aligned with international requirements. I expect that the prestige of TVET will be paramount in the minds of our citizens; therefore, accepting TVET as an ideal pathway to career success.”
She concluded: “I expect that the TVETC will collaborate with Quality Assurance partners to ensure that certificates and qualification standards are accessible to our learners and are portable as they reach out to the career opportunities worldwide.”
