Mr. Victor Callender has also been contributing to the Council's efforts to prepare individuals for the world of work for the past year by contriributing to the development and validation of the following occupational standards:
Pole Planting-Power Line Construction & Maintenance (Distribution) Level 1, Pole Top Hardware Installation (Power Line Construction And Maintenance (Distribution) Level 2 And Electrical Transmission And Distribution -Line Worker Level 3.
Mr. Callender, found that assisting the Council as an occupational expert was extremely beneficial to him. As the Senior Engineering Manager, Distribution Operations, at the Barbados Light and Power Company (BLPC), he explained that his support to the council as an occupational expert aided in the training and hiring of lineman in the BLPC’s training programme. Furthermore, his role entailed reviewing the training related to Caribbean/National Vocational Qualifications (N/CVQs) and providing suggestions, comments and recommendations to improve occupational standards in his line of work and throughout Barbados.
As the TVET Council strives to pursue its goal of preparing a competent and certified workforce in Barbados, Callender believes that efforts such as standards development set the gauge for good work practices and safety in any industry.
He concluded: “This can be achieved through proper training programmes. This would also allow Barbados to be on par with internationally accepted standards through agencies like TVETC.”
